I know of nothing very interesting in the literary world, except a small volume called the Light of Asia, by the English Mr. Arnold, who married W. H. Channing's daughter.
It recites the well-known legends about Buddha, in a form of singular poetic beauty.
He made a great mistake, that good Lord Buddha.
It would have been more wise to have taught his fellow-creatures how to raise more grain, weave more cloth, and take better care of their health, than it was to descend into beggary with them.
But there is something very touching and sublime in his determination to quit regal splendor and luxury, and live among the poor and suffering like a brother.
The book sells well on account of its literary merit, and is helping many other quiet influences to enable human souls to recognize their spiritual kinship.
