A full reconnoissance was accomplished, by which the Commander--in chief was placed in possession of information that would much facilitate any operations of the Army and Navy which might be decided on in the future. On December 5th Commander Drayton again proceeded on a reconnoissance to Saint Helena Sound in the Pawnee, accompanied by the gunboats Unadilla, Commander N. Collins, Isaac Smith, Lieut. Commander J. W. Nicholson, and Coast Survey steamer Vixen, Captain Boutelle. He reached the anchorage off the fort on Otter Island at mid-day; pushed on up Mosquito Creek (no doubt appropriately named), but found no traces of white people, except some burning buildings on Hutchison's Island. It would have been much better for Commander Collins to have waited outside for the coming of. The Federal Government at once disavowed Collins' action, and made ample apology, which the Gor. Secretary Welles give his sympathy to Commander Collins. and, although the Secretary did not ex have been disposed of in the same manner. Collins' action, indeed, met with the popular approvas' action in the case of the Florida. Commander Collins made little effort to defend his course.emand. The circling tactics used by Flag-Officer Du Pont and the tremendous and concentrated fire of his heavy guns quickly bore results, and the lighter-draft vessels, which had taken up an enfilading position to the north of Fort Walker, soon had the latter at their mercy. At twenty The Unadilla Under Lieutenant-Commander N. Collins, the Unadilla took part in the expedition that succeeded in capturing Port Royal, November 9, 1861. The Unadilla was but one of the fifty vessels that had assembled in Hampton Roads by October 27th to join the largest fleet ever commanded by an officer of the American navy up to that time. r career under Captain John Newland Maffit, with a crew of but twenty-two men. She had an adventurous career till she ran into the harbor of Bahia, Oct. 5, 1864, where she encountered a vessel of Wilke's flying squadron, the Wachusett. Commander Napoleon Collins, in violation of the neutrality laws, suddenly attacked the Florida and received her surrender. The Clarence was burned. Within two weeks the Tacony had ten prizes, and the coast between Chesapeake and Casco bays was in a state of 864, and became in the mean time almost a new ship. Back and forth across the Atlantic she went, preying on the merchant vessels of the United States until, on the 5th of October, Lieutenant Morris brought her into the harbor of Bahia. Commander N. Collins, of the United States war-ship Wachusett, then in that port, on October 7, 1864, broke the laws of neutrality and ran into and captured the Florida, which got him a court martial (and in course of time, promotion).
