Elkanah Wales married Susanna Coolidge, a daughter of Nathaniel Coolidge, who kept a tavern from 1764 to 1770, the first house on the south side of the river at Watertown Bridge. This house is still standing in excellent preservation, but the barn and sheds attached show the ravages of time. This was probably the tavern referred to by General Washington, who wrote in his diary Thursday, November 5, 1789, We lodged in this place [Watertown] at the house of Widow Coolidge, near the Bridge, and a very indifferent one it is.
