Mayor's Court, yesterday. --His Honor Joseph Mayo, Mayor, resumed his seat in this Court yesterday morning. The docket has not shown so few cases for months past, and only a few minutes were occupied in disposing of them. The following is a summary: Allen, slave of Joseph Culpeper, and Frank, the property of William Granger, were charged with the robbery of Terrence Roney, on Saturday night. Both of these negroes occupy rooms on the premises, and on the night of the robbery acted so suspiciously as to direct attention to their movements. Roney did not discover his loss till about nine o'clock, and about fifteen minutes before that time they left the lot and did not return during the night. The case was continued. Joshua Owings, sent on to the Hustings Court at a previous examination before the Mayor, but remanded back by that body on account of a mistake in the date of the commitment, was re- examined yesterday and again sent on for indictment by the Grand Jury of
ery circumspect, and not the least suspicion rested on him in connection with this last operation till he was discovered in the act. Taylor denied the charge of theft, and attempted to explain how the nails came to be in his bucket by saying they had been put there by some malicious person who wished him to get in trouble. The case was too plain a one, however, to admit of a doubt, and he was thereupon remanded for indictment by the Grand Jury of the Hustings Court. Allen, slave of Jos. Culpeper, and Frank, slave of William Greanor, arrested on suspicion of burglariously breaking into the dwelling house of Terrence Rony and stealing fifteen hundred dollars in money, were called to the stand, but there being no testimony to sustain the charge, the Mayor promptly discharged them.
