To the people of Hanover.
A card.
--I must reply at once to the kind and flattering call on me in to-day's Enquirer. I should not have announced myself a candidate for the Convention.
The solemn concerns involved, the right of the people to select their representative unembarrassed by personal motives, in my opinion, forbid my doing so. I can, therefore, only say, that I accept gratefully and willingly the position assigned me by that call; but subject to the condition that my doing so must not constrain or embarrass the supporters of Southern rights in any course they may think proper to pursue.
C. W. Dabney.
