The same reply may be given as to the causes of pauperism. Four different careful studies of the causes of pauperism have been made, two in New York State, one in Indiana, and one in Berlin. The first which I have in mind was made by Mr. Richard L. Dugdale, and was called The Jukes. The ancestor of the Jukes is called Margaret, the mother of criminals.
