Wright, Rebecca McPherson
Spy; born near Winchester, Va., Jan. 31, 1838.
On Sept. 16, 1864, General Sheridan sent her a message which was carried in the mouth of a negro.
It contained these words: Can you inform me of the position of Early's forces, the number of divisions in his army, and the strength of all or any of them, and his probable or reported intentions?
Have any more troops arrived from Richmond, or are any more coming or reported to be coming?
Upon the information received from her Sheridan planned the assault upon Winchester.
She was appointed a clerk in the United States Treasury Department in 1868; and married William C. Bonsai in 1871.
