The old lady of Manassa. --We have observed, in some quarters, a disposition to cast obloquy upon the memory of Mrs. Henry, the venerable lady who was killed in her house during the battle of Manassa. Why this should be done, we know not. Mrs. Henry was a daughter of Landon Carter, of Pittsylvania, (her mother was a Miss Landon,) and grand-daughter of one of the first settlers of Virginia, King Carter. She was the widow of Dr. Isaac Henry, Surgeon in the United States Navy, and was 85 years of age at the time of her death. At the time of the battle, a relative, Miss Ann H. Edwards, aged about 100 years, left her house and rode some four or five miles to escape danger, but was so much affected by the terrible scenes of the day that she has since died. Surely, we think Mrs. Henry's memory should be shielded from reproach, when all the circumstances are taken into consideration.
