on. In the course of this service he took a part in the battles of Pocotaligo and Coosawhatchie, and acted for some time as courier for Captain Bachman. This youthful service for the Confederacy was characterized by the devotion and patriotism of all true South Carolinians. Since the close of hostilities he has resided at Columbia, and for many years has been successfully engaged in business as a druggist. He is prominent as a citizen, and has served one term as mayor of the city. Augustus Fitch, M. D., of Charleston, formerly of the medical service of the provisional army of the Confederate States, is a native of Columbia, S. C., born in 1830. He pursued his literary studies at the city of his birth, and in 1857 was graduated professionally at the medical college of the State of South Carolina. Immediately thereafter he embarked in the practice at Charleston, and when the crisis arrived in 1860 enjoyed more than a promise of success, his popularity being evidenced by the rank
