company dismounted, and, leaving their horses, proceeded on foot through the woods to within two miles of Paducah, where there was a Federal Picket composed of six dragoons, four of whom were shot and two taken prisoners. During the firing Mr. James C. Fleming, of the Memphis Light Dragoons, and John Gallagher, of Capt. Ballentine's company, who had become separated from their companions, were shot before they were recognized. Dr. Holmes was shot and wounded by the Federals. Holmes and Fleming will probably recover.
