it grows wider, the channel also running nearer to the Maryland shore. The batteries are still under the immediate charge of Capt. Chatard, of the Navy, but General French, the successor of Gen. Trimble, is commander of the post. As regards the blockade, I believe it to be complete, provided all the batteries open fire upon any last week, three men in battery No. I were struck, one of them severely wounded; his physician thinks he will recover, although the wound is a bad one. Gen. W. H. French, the successor of Gen. Trimble, is said to be by his brother officers a man of decided military genius, but I have no personal acquaintance with him. He was ice with the Maryland Volunteers, and has since been promoted to his present position. Engineering is the science in which he particularly excels. Next to Gen. French comes Brig. Gen. Wigfall, of Texas, who has his headquarters in Dumfries. The personal appearance of Gen. Wigfall is too well known to the people of the South
