After the close of the war Mr. Ellison returned home and began farming, which occupation he has followed since. He was married, in 1872, to Miss Kate Gaillard, and they have eleven children living. S. P. H. Elwell, D. D., a distinguished minister of the South Carolina conference of the Methodist Episcopal church, was born in Clarendon county, January 5, 1842, a grandson of John Freierson, a soldier of the Revolution. He completed a course of study at the Sumter male academy in 1858, and then returning home engaged in farming until the winter of 1860-61, when he enlisted in Company H, Fifth regiment South Carolina troops.
