se of hostilities he continued his practice in Edgefield county with much success, until 1892. Meanwhile he took an influential part in political affairs, and in 1882 was elected to the legislature. Being again elected in 1890 he resigned after the first session, and was elected to the State senate to fill the unexpired term of W. J. Ready, deceased. Continuing in that body by re-election in 1892, he speedily attained such prominence as to be chosen president pro tempore, and when Lieut.-Gov. E. B. Gary was elected associate justice of the Supreme court Dr. Timmerman became by virtue of his position acting lieutenant-governor of the State, to assume which honor he vacated his seat in the senate. He was elected to this office without opposition in 1894, and served until January, 1897, then assuming the duties of State treasurer, to which he had been elected without opposition in 1896.
