Gates, Sir Thomas 1609- Colonial governor; born in England in the sixteenth century, and lived during a part of the seventeenth; left England with 500 settlers for the Virginia colony in 1609. The expedition consisted of ten ships, three of which were lost during the voyage, which did not end till May 24, 1610. Gates soon after returned to England to report the affairs of the colony, and collected 300 new emigrants, with whom he arrived in Virginia in August, 1611. He then became governand in the sixteenth century, and lived during a part of the seventeenth; left England with 500 settlers for the Virginia colony in 1609.
