The selectmen were authorized to borrow one thousand dollars to pay the same. An enlistment paper was opened at the meeting, and four young men of Eastham immediately enrolled their names as volunteers. These filled the quota of the town. The names of the young men were Francis Penmore, Henry Morrison, Peter Higgins, Nathan A. Gill. The meeting then passed the following resolutions— Resolved, That we cherish an unfaltering attachment to the Union and the Constitution formed by our patriotic fathers, and deeply deplore the cause which has produced such an unhappy alienation between the people of the North and South, which has ripened into a gigantic rebellion and unprecedented civil war.
