But that does no good to the cause, I fear. A sufficient number of men must be placed in the ranks, or there will be no military success. The Senate has passed a bill abolishing the Bureau of Conscription, and it is now before the House. That is one step in the right direction. Hon. J. Goode yesterday made a speech in favor of its abolition, in which he said 150,000 men had been handled by the bureau during the last twelve months, and only 13,000 had been sent to the army! But it did not pass — no vote was taken; it is to be hoped it will pass to-day. It is rumored that the money-printing machine was lost at Columbia, including a large amount of treasure --if Confederate Treasury notes be worthy that appellation. Mr. Goode, of Mecklenburg, moved a call of the roll. The Chairman said it would not be in order to make a call of the House in Committee of the Whole. Mr. Amuler, of Louisa, said it was in order to call the attention of the Chair to the fact that there was not a quorum present. rom South Carolina, and Gen. Starke, Commissioner from Mississippi, before the Legislature of Virginia. The destruction consequent upon the refusal of Virginia, then foretold, had come to pass. Gentlemen might sing hymns and psalms and plans to the Union, but it was destroyed, and he believed that upon their heads rested the responsibility. They refused to go into the Conference with their sisters, and now Virginia was left almost alone under an abolitionized Government. In conclusion, Mr. Goode paid a tribute to the gallantry of South Carolina, and prayed that Virginia might soon follow in her footsteps. Mr. Seawell, of Gloucester, said that he was glad that the gentleman from Powhatan, (Mr. Scott,) had disclosed the motive which induced him to offer the amendment to the amendment — namely, to defeat the amendment itself. Mr. Scott replied that such was not his motive; he would vote against the resolution as amended, because he thought the amendment unnecessary. Mr
