Goodrich, Samuel Griswold 1793-1860 Author; popularly known as Peter parley ; born in Ridgefield, Conn., Aug. 19, 1793; was a publisher in Hartford in 1824; soon afterwards he settled in Boston, and for many years edited The token. He began the issuing of Peter parley's tales in 1827, and continued them until 1857. He also published geographical and historical school-books. From 1841 to 1854 he edited and published Merry's Museum and Parley's magazine. Of 170 volumes written by him, 11ed The token. Of 170 volumes written by him, 116 bear the name of Peter parley ; and more than 7,000,000 copies of his books for the young have been sold. Mr. Goodrich was American consul at Paris during Fillmore's administration. He died in New York City, May 9, 1860.

Frederick Swartout Cozzens (1818-69), a New York wine merchant with literature as a hobby, cultivated a pleasant vein of mild, dry humour which produced The Sparrowgrass papers (1856), describing the experiences of a New York cockney who retires to Yonkers to live. The Travels, Voyages, and Adventures of Gilbert Go-Ahead (1856), recording the deeds of a shrewd clock-selling Yankee in different parts of the world, was probably by the most prodigious literary hack of his day, Samuel Griswold Goodrich (1793-1860), Peter Parley. A widely travelled New York naval officer, Henry Augustus Wise (1819-69), wrote several extravagant volumes of sea exploits, of which Tales for the Marines (1855) was probably best known. nir, already mentioned as the earliest of its kind in America, was published by H. C. Carey and I. Lea of Philadelphia from 1826 to 1832. It was a small and not a very elaborate volume, but it contained poems, essays, and tales by some of the most popular writers of the day. After the issue for 1832 it was merged with The Token, published by Gray & Bowen, of Boston, and later volumes of the latter bore the title The Token and Atlantic Souvenir. The Token was first issued in 1828 with Samuel G. Goodrich as both editor and publisher, and Goodrich continued to edit it until its demise in 1842, except the second volume, which bore the name of N. P. Willis on the title-page. The Token was one of the best of the earlier annuals as regards literary content, and though less showy than many of its later rivals it contained illustrations of high merit. uence, however, came from the two men. These were Samuel Griswold Goodrich (1793-1860) and Jacob Abbott (1803-79). The son of a clergyman, Goodrich set out with a theory and an admiration for the method of Miss Hannah More.
