of the citizens' meeting were adopted by the city government, and the mayor was directed to make arrangements for enlisting men. Another citizens' meeting was held on the 14th of August, at which it was resolved, that the patriotism of Massachusetts will sustain the Government in putting down this Rebellion at any cost of men and money. It was also voted to raise, by subscription, money sufficient to add one hundred dollars to each volunteer's bounty. A resolution was passed to aid the Rev. Elihu Grant to raise a military company for active service. September 1st, The city government voted to pay a bounty of two hundred dollars to each volunteer for nine months service, when credited to the quota of the city; and forty-five thousand dollars were appropriated to pay the same. The following letter, addressed to the mayor, was read, and a vote of thanks to the writer was passed:— New Orleans, La., Sept. 21, 1862. . Two volumes. Vol. I., published in the spring of 1868, contains a consecutive war narrative as derived from the State records and correspondence. It is the complete history of Governor Andrew's public career. Vol. II., published in the fall of 1871, is devoted to the work of the different towns and cities of this Commonwealth. It is made up from new and valuable materials. This work has been very favorably noticed by the press, and flattering testimonials were received from President Grant, General Sherman, the Massachusetts Senators, Hon. E. R. Hoar, late Attorney-General, and many others. Price of each volume, five dollars. The two volumes may now be obtained, as a set, for eight dollars. Extra bindings, in sheep or Turkey morocco, will be supplied on order at cost price. Each volume is complete in itself. Published by the author, and sold by subscription only. Copies sent free of charge, by mail or express, to any address, on receipt of the subscription price.
