engine, and another splintered the timber near the starboard bearings of the main shaft. As the boat floated down the stream, one section of the Valverde battery was alternately pouring its murderous shots into the crippled gunboat, while the other section took position below, and waited for their prey to drift within the range of their guns. Nothing could have been managed more admirably than the two sections of this battery. Col. Waller's men were dismounted, and did great execution, in company with the sharpshooters of the Arizona battalion, and the gallant men of the 28th (Col. Gray's) regiment. Thus she drifted for about two miles, shot at and struck from almost every imaginable point on this side of the river, from Skeggs's to ousel's. Those who still controlled the boat doubtlessly hoped she would float down far enough to be relieved by the Yankee gunboats from Berwick's Bay. But at length they despaired of relief, a white flag was hung out, and the boat surrendered.
