Hampton's brigade, under the immediate command of the General himself, fell upon and completely surprised a picket force of the enemy at Deep Run, in Fauquier county, about ten miles beyond the Rappahannock river. So sudden and expected was the descent upon them that they surrendered without firing a shot.
