Assault and robbery.
--On Monday night last, Mr. Thos. Hardy, engineer of the mail train on the Fredericksburg Railroad, came down from Hungary station on a hand-car, which he alighted from at the upper end of Broad street, and started for his residence on Marshall street. He had proceeded but a short distance, when he was met by three men, one of whom dealt him a tremendous blow in the forehead, which felled him to the ground.
Mr. Hardy, still conscious, found that they were searching hhe ground.
Mr. Hardy, still conscious, found that they were searching his pockets, and struggled to extricate himself from their clutches, when he received another stunning blow on his head.
They then robbed him of a valuable gold watch and departed.
Mr. H.'s injuries were severe, the blows having been inflicted probably with a slung-shot, but he has recovered sufficiently to attend to business.
Is there no plan by which the gangs of desperadoes who now infest the city can be apprehended?
