False Pretences. --Frank Livingston, charged with obtaining money from Captains F. Kilpatrick and Jas. G. Hawthorne, by false pretence, was arraigned before the Mayor yesterday. It appeared from the testimony that he represented himself to be a lieutenant in the 14th Louisiana regiment, and had so registered himself on the book at the Exchange; that an intimacy sprang up between himself and Captains Kilpatrick and Hawthorne, and to relieve him of temporary embarrassment, until be could pHawthorne, and to relieve him of temporary embarrassment, until be could procure an exchange of his Louisiana. money, then on deposit, one of them loaned him $20 and the other $7. It turned out that his representations were unfounded, and the two officers, finding they had been victimized, concluded that it was best to put a stop to such sharp practices, and therefore made the complaint which led to his arrest. The Judge, on motion of the attorney for G. A. Lumpkin, in the first indictment found against him for forging Owens & Son's name, quashed the indictment for errors apparent on its face. The indictment found above is the second one in the same case. James Jones was put on trial for stealing a trunk and contents from Capt. James G. Hawthorne. --Messrs. E. Y. Cannon and D. B. Lucas appeared for the prisoner. The robbery was effected several weeks ago on Mayo's bridge, near the Danville depot. An old negro named Billy had started with the trunk from Manchester, intending to carry it to the railroad depot, when he was suddenly beset by robbers after crossing Mayo's bridge and despoiled of his charge. Sentenced. --A number of prisoners heretofore convicted of various offences were carried before Judge Lyons yesterday, and sentenced according to the findings of the jury in each several case. Included in the number were John Murray, sentenced for eighteen years for the murder of Mike Leary; John Westerfield, for three years and six months for grand larceny; James Jones, for three years for stealing a trunk and contents from Capt. James G. Hawthorne, and Albert G. Short, for three years for the murder of George Bailey, a soldier. Execution of sentence in Short's case was suspended for fifteen days, in order to allow him time, if he thinks proper, to apply to the Supreme Court of Appeals for a new trial.
