Ashland Hall was crowded last night to its utmost capacity, to select a candidate to represent this city in the approaching State Convention. Mr. James R. Hubbard, on taking the chair, made a speech of an hour's duration, in which he enumerated the aggressions of the North, depicted the horrors of submitting to Black Republican rule, denounced Gen. Scott as a traitor and a scoundrel, and declared fo generally understood,) requested that they would not interfere with its proceedings. This had the desired effect. Order being restored, a committee of five were appointed to recommend a suitable candidate. They brought in the name of James R. Hubbard, which was greeted with tremendous applause. The question being put, he was nominated without a dissenting voice. The 4th of February will be an important day in the history of Virginia. Exciting times are expected here. The work
