Sam Adams regiments,
The name applied by Lord North to the 14th and 29th regiments of British soldiers, which had been stationed in Boston for more than a year when the massacre of 1770 occurred, in which Crispus Attucks (see Boston), among others, was killed.
A formal demand for the immediate removal of these troops from the city was made on Governor Hutchinson by a committee of which Samuel Adams was chairman.
The British authorities proposed to compromise the trouble by sending away the 29th Regiment, but Adams insisted on both regiments or none.
He stirred up such a commotion in the streets of the city that both regiments were ordered away within a few hours.
