Upon special application to General Carter, the negro wench who acts as head schoolmarm was recently placed in full possession of the old Strong mansion, on Cumberland street, as a residence for herself, General Brooks and family being summarily ejected to base room for her sable majesty. Fort Sanders has been greatly enlarged and strengthened, and now covers several acres of ground. There have been few deaths among the old residents, and but one marriage to the invaders since Lieutenant Bake's nigger girl united her destiny with the Yankee Lieutenant McWilliams. The old tories of the town seem to fear the contamination, as they are sending their marriageable daughters to Cincinnati, Pellsfield, Lexington and other points, under pretence of placing them at school. J. G. Gant is endeavoring to be made a Judge by appointment from Andy Johnson in the Cleveland circuit whilst Dan Trowhitt is an aspirant for the position of Chancellor, in room of Ron. A. G. Warker, deposed.
e expulsion of the foe from our State. [Fourth Dispatch.] Atlanta, Aug. 2. --All quiet around the lines this morning. The enemy shelled the city for half an hour last evening. Our army is much elated at the deafest of the raiders in their rear. The enemy is still massing towards our left. Nashville papers of the 29th mention the death of McPherson. The Yankees estimate their losses in the battle of the 23d at 2,500. Geary's, Ward's, Williams's, McCook's, Newton's, Johnson's and Thomas's Federal divisions were engaged. A special to the New York times, of the 27th, says that Morgan has joined Early and Breckinridge. Senator Mallory, of Ky., was killed by a soldier on the 27th. Edwin Poschal, an editor of the Nashville press, was arrested on the 25th ult., and gave bond in the sum of $5,000. [Fifth Dispatch.] Macon, August 3, 1864. --Trains from Atlanta arrive and depart regularly on time. Affairs there wear the usual aspect. The s
