Interesting account of the battle.[correspondence of the Richmond Dispatch.] Groveton, near Manassas, Sunday, Aug. 31, 1862. As a favorable opportunity offers to write you, and as many Richmond men were in the great fight yesterday, I will drop you a line stating simply what I saw and what part was taken by the battalion to which my company is attached. It is composed of four companies--Capts. Jordan, of Bedford; Rhett, of S. C.; Eubank, and W. W. Parker, of Virginia. Hearing that a fight would probably come off yesterday, Col. S. D. Lee, of S. C., who commands the battalion, pushed on from Salem on Friday last till 2 A. M. Saturday, when we found ourselves upon the battle-field of the day before. Besides the above, there were about 57 members of the 1st, 2d, and 3d Va. regiments, (Pierpont's satellites,) mostly with very outlandish names, for persons claiming to be Virginia volunteers. The following citizens were also in the group, having been found in suspicious company, viz:--J L Smith, Matthew Bryce, Talmadge Thorne, Samuel Davis, W T Smith, Jno G Webster, W W Gardner. Negroes — Tom Genus, from N Y, free boy; Geo Jordan do, Pa; Tom Jackson, N Y, do; Esau, slave of Wm Bowen, who has taken the oath of allegiance to Lincolns Government; Chas Montgomery, free, from Washington; R B Wilson, free, Ohio; and Jno Williams, free, from Alexandria, Va. All the white men in the above lot who bore commissions are considered as belonging to Pope's, army and are therefore not prisoners of war.

however, we drove him more than a mile, and had possession of his dead the next day. At 9 o'clock the battery to which I was attached having 21 men killed and wounded, and having also lost 12 horses, was ordered out of the fight by Col. Lee, and fears were entertained that some of our guns might not be brought off, hence we were ordered to throw off all baggage, thus leaving some thirty of the men without blankets and overcoats. The batteries engaged in this part of the field were Capts. Jordan's, Rhett's, Woolfolk's, Moody's and Parker's. Of some 300 men engaged about 80 casualties occurred. Parker's battery suffered the most, and as it is from Richmond, I give you the names of killed and wounded: Killed.--Privates Robert Bryant, J M Richardson, and Wm T Newell.
