Kearney, which seems to have been addressed to Gen. Franklin, requesting him to send two brigades instantly to his relief, to assist in repelling Magruder. Franklin'sright proved eminently successful, and after much hard fighting our troops found themselves in the enemy's camp, facing the whole division of Sumner's Hooker, and Kearney, supported to the right and left of the road by not less than thirty pieces of artillery. Fronting and in the midst of the camp, also, artillery was stationed, ads not less than seventeen fine field pieces, hundreds of small arms and stores. It is reported that during the fight Gen. Hocker was killed on the field, Gen. Kearney wounded, and Gen. Sumner taken prisoner. Their whole loss is estimated at 5,000, killed, wounded, and prisoners.
