Never heard anything derogatory to his character. When I arrested him he said his wife was sick, but his son told me this morning that she was not. The Mayor remanded the prisoner to be examined before a called Court of Hustings on the 23d inst., and refused bail. Virginia McFadden, charged with stabbing James Keller. In consequence of the absence of witnesses and the critical situation of the wounded man, this case was continued to the 21st inst. The counsel for the defence (Mr. Crane) prepared a statement with a view to applying to Judge Lyons for bail. Charles Gerth, charged with stealing two overcoats, valued at $20, from F. Dickman. Mr. Dickman deposed that on the 14th inst. he had come to town, and was going home about 6 o'clock P. M., having two overcoats in his rockaway. He stopped to m
rd a great commotion inside, and went to see what was the matter. They found evidences of a desperate affray all-about — the furniture broken, the floor stained with blood, and a general excitement prevailing among the occupants. A man named James Keller, said to be a Baltimorean, exhibited a ghastly wound, extending from the top of his head down to the cheek bone. He was placed under the care of a surgeon, and subsequently carried to his apartment over the Confederate House, on Main street; ed under the care of a surgeon, and subsequently carried to his apartment over the Confederate House, on Main street; below Fourteenth. One of the females of the basic, named Virginia McFadden, was arrested on a charge of cutting Keller; but, as the case has not yet been investigated, we are unprepared to say that she is guilty of the offence. Representations were yesterday made in regard to her health, which induced Judge Lyons to admit her to bail to appear before the Mayor on Tuesday next.
