rejoined his family near Manning, S. C., where they had taken refuge, and in November, 1866, he made his residence at Charleston. For many years he has been connected with the People's national bank, of Charleston, beginning in a minor position and becoming cashier in June, 1880, the position he has ever since held. His fidelity to trust, and courteous and capable business methods, have been the distinguishing characteristics of his civil career. In 1878 Mr. Sparkman was married to Eliza Augusta Kirk, daughter of Philip C. Kirk, and they have four children: Edward H. Jr., Henry Berkeley, Mary Augusta, and Carl Otto Witte. A brother of Mr. Sparkman, James R., sixteen years old at the time of his enlistment, served in 1865, in Parker's battery. Leland McNary Speers Leland McNary Speers was born in Newberry county, S. C., October 19, 1841. His father, John A. Speers, was an orderly-sergeant in the Palmetto regiment in the Mexican war and was killed at the battle of Churubusco.
