also attacked Mill Creek Gap, held by Stewart's division, in very strong force, and made a determined effort to carry it by storm, but after a long and desperate struggle, were whipped back with great loss. Maney's brigade also whipped back the enemy with severe loss. Simultaneous with the attack on Stevenson and Stewart, the enemy made an attack on Hindman's left, and were whipped. The day closed with our army holding every position, and I have no doubt of our ability to repel every attack. Gen. Johnston was on the field to-day, and by his presence greatly cheered the troops. The army is enthusiastic and confident of victory. The great battle will no doubt be fought to- morrow. The 8th Texas cavalry made a charge on the Yankee cavalry on the Cleveland road to-day, capturing Col. C. H. Lagrange, of the 1st Wisconsin cavalry, commanding brigade, and eighty- four officers and privates. Our loss to-day not very heavy, although several officers were wounded.
