-The supply of Beef is very large. Sales at from $3 to $4 per cwt. gross. There are few sales at the extremes, however. The bulk of sales were at $3.50@$3.75. Sheep.--Supply not very good. Death of John A. Lancaster. We regret to learn that this gentleman, one of our oldest and most highly respected citizens, died at his residence on Thursday. He had been suffering for several years under a dropsy, and his death was not unexpected, either by himself or his friends. Mr. Lancaster was one of a class which iMr. Lancaster was one of a class which is fact passing away, and the like of which it is probable we shall not see again. He was one of those old-fashioned, strong-minded, upright Virginia merchants, who gave a name to Richmond for enterprise and activity, when she was yet little more than a village. His life had been spent here from his boyhood, and he was familiar wiry step the city had taken in the career which has been so successful. He himself contributed in no small degree to her advancement. As the head of the firm of Lancaster & Denby, in former days, he was widely known — probably as widely as any merchant of his day. Of late years, he confined himself almost entirely to the business
Funeral Services. --The funeral of Mr. John A. Lancaster took place on Saturday, services being performed at the Monumental Church. The deceased was buried with Masonic honors.
Mr. Jas. Pierce, of Nansemond county, Va., has lost in a few weeks past five children, from that dreadful disease, diphtheria. The Stowah (Ga.) Iron Works, have been sold to Messrs. Cothran, Shorter & Rhett, for $155,000. Jeremiah A. Reeves, a planter from North Carolina, was swindled out of $75 in Charleston, S. C., last week, by two confidence men. Dr. Gideon C. Marchant, who had held many prominent political positions in North Carolina, died on the 25th ult. The cooper shop of B. & J. A. Lancaster, in Wheeling, Va., was destroyed by fire on the 31st ult. Loss $1,600. Teresita, the daughter of Garibaldi, is about to be married to M. Lucien Blachi, a professor at Sienna. John McGaughey, an old citizen of Wheeling, Va., died on the 29th ult. Thos. Dunn, of Rhode Island, has been appointed Cousul at Foo Choo, China. The Rhode Island Legislature has adjourned until 26th inst. There has been but one case of small-pox in Raleigh, N. C.
