terday evening, dated Halifax C. H., May 6th, 1861, signed by J. W. Craddock, J. P. for that county, which states that a Mr. Layton, who has been traveling in that county as agent for the sale of Johnson & Browning's Family Atlas, published in Richmocitizens, or a large portion of them, held a meeting here Saturday last, and after due deliberation were satisfied that Mr. Layton and his wife were very suspicious characters, and as such we would send them to your city on Tuesday morning, per railroad. Mr. Layton gave his pledge that he would remain in our village and leave on Tuesday, as we desired, we pledging ourselves to protect him, if necessary, till that time. He violated that pledge, and took his departure last night about 2 o'clock,ope that you will make some mention of this in your papers, so that he may be caught and dealt with as he deserves."
