Liddell, were distinguished in the gallant and successful charge of Law's brigade, and suffered severely, the Second having 21 killed and 79 wounded; the Eleventh 18 killed and 142 wounded. In the same battle, the Twelfth regiment, under Maj. W. H. Lilly, the Nineteenth, under Maj. John Mullins, and the Second battalion, under Lieutenant-Colonel Taylor, fought under the brigade command of Featherston. Major Lilly was wounded and the command devolved upon Captain Thomas. While at Yorktown our term of service expired, and the regiment was reorganized by the election of W. H. Taylor, colonel; M. B. Harris, lieutenant-colonel, and W. H. Lilly, major. J. H. Capers was appointed adjutant, and E. H. McCaleb sergeant-major. Joseph E. Johnston, with his heroic army, after delaying McClellan many weekslected manner, won for himself the soubriquet of the old war horse on that sanguinary field. Lieutenant-Colonel Harris was severely wounded in the head, and Major W. H. Lilly rendered indispensable assistance to Colonel Taylor in directing the movements of the regiment and assigning the companies to the position they were respectfwhile the orderly sergeant of the Natchez Fenccibles was calling the roll, a murderous hailstorm of bullets rained down upon us. The order was given to charge. Major Lilly was severely wounded, and Meriwether Jones, of the Claiborne Guards, a talented and promising son of old Claiborne, together with many other brave young men, we
smen. The 12th Mississippi went out in the morning with 397 men, lost in this engagement 12 killed, 68 wounded, and 9 missing; the regiment was commanded by Major W. H. Lilly. who was wounded leading a charge,--the Colonel being absent and sick, and the Lieutenant Colonel wounded. The 19th Mississippi went into action with 521--om Featherstone's brigade.
