Mason, John young 1799-1859 Diplomatist; born in Greenville county, Va., April 18, 1799; graduated at the University of North Carolina in 1816; admitted to the bar in 1819; member of Congress in 1831-37; appointed judge of the United States disstrict court of Virginia, and subsequently of the General Court of Virginia. He was Secretary of the Navy under President Tyler; Attorney-General and Secretary of the Navy under President Polk. In 1853 President Pierce appointed him United States minister to France. He died in Paris, Oct. 3, 1859.
