Depredations upon private property. The column of Yankee troops which left Fredericksburg some two weeks ago stopped at Verdersville, in Orange county, where they stole and destroyed a considerable amount of property. They demanded from Catlett Rhodes all his corn and bacon, refusing to make any remuneration; and then broke open the store and dwelling of T. J. Hatch, postmaster, demolished his furniture, and destroyed or carried off his goods. They also stole a horse from Henry Hatch, and committed various other excesses. Several citizens were arrested and held in custody for twenty-four hours, when they were released. Private letters from Gloucester state that no less than three thousand negroes have been run off from that county and Matthews since the invasion by the enemy.
