He is popular with the people, and it is thought that he is the only man who would share the soldiers' vote with Lincoln. I presume it will make little die nomination. The Convention will, however, be powerfully influenced by the events of the military campaign. Should the South gain great victories before July, McClellan will be thrown aside for some one whose anti war record has been clear from the beginning-some one like Thomas H. Seymour, of Connecticut, or ex-President Pierce. Should the South merely hold its own and the Federal Government fall to make any decided progress, McClellan will surely be nominated, and he stands equally as good a chance in case we meet with serious defeats.
