om James' Island to a friend, published in one of our exchanges, says: "One incident that I witnessed at the time the Louisiana battalion was coming to our support, is particularly worthy of mention, and may have done much towards deciding the fortunes of the day. As the battalion crossed the bridge connecting Secessionville with the main, Lieutenant-Colonel Wagener, who commanded at the battery, summoned Sergeant Hendricks, of our company, (the Union Light Infantry,) and gave him an order to convey to Col. McEnery, instructing that officer what direction to take in order to meet the enemy, then flanking our battery on the left. Sergeant Hendricks immediately started through a heavy tire of grape and musketry from both sides, and delivered the order and returned to his company the same way, through another heavy fire, without receiving the slightest injury, and resumed, his place at the battery. It was a gallant and during feat, eliciting the admiration of both officers and men."
