Semple's battery is attached to this brigade, but had been,layed by two batteries taking the road. The brigade was formed in lines as follows: Right — Hankins, Lowry, Breedlove, McGaughey; Adams, left. Brigadier-General Polk was on my right; Brigadier-General Deshler on my left. At this time Major-Generaorized person giving a command to retreat (see report of Sixteenth Alabama regiment), and that was soon rectified by Major McGaughey. The whole command lay upon their arms during the night, in line of battle. Semple's battery, attached to my briga-six killed on the field, and six hundred and eighty wounded. Many have died since, among them four field officers: Major McGaughey, of the Sixteenth Alabama regiment; Major Carr, Thirty-second Mississippi; Major Hankins, Hankins' sharpshooters; Ma
