emselves in readiness. And the Wilmington Journal adds: We are informed that the free colored population of our town are ready and willing to do anything that they may be called upon to do in the present emergency. This is the proper spirit. Let them act up to it, and they will be fully protected and provided for. A number went down to the forts this morning.--More will go to-morrow. South Carolina. The Charleston papers of Thursday furnish the following items: Colonel McRae, of North Carolina, returned last night with the Columbiads for which Gov. Ellis asked. We learn that Gov. Ellis expects an attack in less than two days, and that he is making every possible preparation for it. Already a number of guns have been obtained from Virginia and placed in position. Capt. Bowen, of the schooner G. D. & R. F. Shannon, of Philadelphia, from Boston, loaded with i e, and consigned to J. M. Duryea, of Charleston, arrived at this port on Wednesday, and furnishes

ttery may do. Let it be distinctly understood, then, that on land at present the Secessionists number at least five times more than the Federal troops. Take all our available men from the ships, and you cannot make up one-third of our enemies' strength. There have been serious impediments, too, placed in the water within eight days, and it is now very doubtful whether, forts left out, ships could go up to the Yard. Then Montgomery and Warrington are connected by the iron railway horse, and reinforcements may be poured in. I mention these matters only to plainly establish one fact, namely; we cannot take a permanent and offensive stand in Florida with 1,500 men. Defend Pickens, hold Rosa Island, batter down McRae and Barrancas, we may, but will the American people be satisfied with this? Let the Cabinet decide whether Federal forces are concentrated here to defend Pickens until it shall be made of little consequence, or to take the Navy Yard and make the Fort impregnable in time.
sed the fine company of cavalry from Sorry, which left for home that morning. About 1 o'clock, the troops left the ground and rode to the city, passing through the Capitol Square and in front of the Governor's mansion. Our citizens never before saw such a splendid cavalcade upon the streets, and everybody was delighted with the spectacle.--This visit to the city was in accordance with the general wish, not only of our residents, but of the troops themselves, and we are gratified that Col. McRae decided upon giving such an order. After returning to the camp, and going through some further manœuvres, the parting salute was given, the troops were dismissed, and the encampment broke up. It was designed to protract it some days, and the Governor had intimated a willingness to appropriate a sum of money to defray expenses, in consideration of its importance at this period; but some of the companies having made arrangements to leave, it was not deemed expedient to detain the remain

yesterday putting in order some old rifles and double-barrelled shot guns. The invasion by the Lincolnites will be checked before it reaches our line. We will give them a taste of Arkansas hospitality — right between the eyes! We had already sent, as we thought, nearly all the effective and available men to the field; but this second turnout will astonish you. Nearly all the good, serviceable horses are already in the field, and the rest for the most part will have to go afoot. Gen. McRae passed up to Fort Smith a few days since, staying over night here. We are looking for stirring times all along Mason and Dixon's line, and especially at Cairo and in Virginia. I should like to hear of the capture of the great mud hole (Cairo), and also of the bombardment and destruction of that infamous and insolent sink of iniquity, "Sinsennatty," which could easily be done with a few columbiads and mortars planted opposite on the Kentucky shore. It is to be regretted that the cour
