ceremonies. Finding they were within a mile of the town, a halt was ordered until daylight. About eight o'clock the fog lifted, disclosing a rebel battery of four guns, commanding the bridge across a stream in advance. Our men crept up as close to the stream as possible, some of them venturing too far for safety.
