Mayor's court, Saturday. --Mary Roach, charged with using abusive and threatening language towards Daniel Steward, was required to give security in the sum of two hundred dollars for her good behavior. Thaddeus, slave of William S. Morris, charged with stealing one table cover and a piano cover, valued, hundred and fifty dollars, and two sets of castors, valued at four hundred dollars, was committed for his appearance on Monday. The charge of dealing with a slave without the permission of her owner, preferred against Ellen, slave of Mrs. Washington, was continued till Tuesday.
Heavy Robbery. --The store-room of Dr. William S. Morris, on Franklin street, Linden Row, was forcibly entered on Monday night and robbed of three barrels of flour, twenty-nine pieces of bacon, and several other articles of provisions. Subsequently, three barrels of flour and twenty pieces of bacon were found, by officers Jenkins and Griffin, in the kitchen of Dr. James Bolton; whereupon those officers arrested the following negroes, found therein, on the charge of committing the theft: Noble, slave of Angelina Lawson; Primas, slave of Dr. Bolton, and John, slave of Jackson Sleet. They were committed to prison to await examination before the Mayor this morning.
e the Hustings Court. James Griffin, arrested upon a warrant charging him with obtaining, under false pretences, a load of straw from a negro driver of N. A. Bowe, was required to give security for his appearance to answer the offence on Monday. Noble, slave of Angelina Lawson, was charged with breaking into the dwelling house of his mistress and stealing therefrom a valuable lot of sheets, table--cloths, ladies' wearing apparel, &c.; but, owing to the absence of witnesses, the case was postponed till Tuesday. [The prisoner is the same negro who was arrested and whipped, a short time since, on the charge of burglariously entering and robbing the dwelling-house of Dr. William S. Morris.] The case of Zeph Ford, charged with stealing fourteen pounds of powder, the property of some person unknown, was further continued. Charles Chambers, charged with assaulting and beating Josephine Demerritt, was held to security to answer the offence before His Honor this morning.
