nife, on 17th street, Saturday night, was discharged the circumstances justifying a little indignation on his part. --Wm. H. Murphy professing to be Captain of company F, 15th Louisiana regiment, and John Dwyer, were brought to the bar and required f the amount. By one of those fortuitous circumstances which can only happen under a similar state of affairs, "Captain" Murphy appeared and announced his readiness to accept Dwyer into his company. Certain papers were made out by the obliging "Cao return with the balance of the money, which he was to procure from Colonel Barksdale. On seeing the papers made out by Murphy, Col. B. pronounced them worthless; whereupon Gholson hurried back to try and recover his funds. He did not find Dwyer or Murphy till next day, and then succeeded only by the aid of an officer Gholson got $400 of his money from a man with whom Dwyer had deposited it, and $100 from "a lady" with whom he had left it. The balance Dwyer said he had either lost in th
nued until Friday. --Lydia, slave of Wm. Whip, was committed to jail as a runaway.--Sarah, slave of Dr. Petit, charged with assaulting and beating a child of Sallie Collins's, and abusing the latter, was ordered to be whipped. John Dwyer and Wm. H. Murphy, charged with swindling John C. Gholson out of $500, were disposed of; Dwyer going into a good company as a substitute, according to his original agreement with Gholson, and Murphy (the bogus Captain) being sent back to Castle Thunder, to be Whip, was committed to jail as a runaway.--Sarah, slave of Dr. Petit, charged with assaulting and beating a child of Sallie Collins's, and abusing the latter, was ordered to be whipped. W. Davis. The defendant was committed for final trial before Judge Lyons. Margaret, slave of George Williams, was tried for stealing a $100 C. S. Treasury note from John W. Davics, her employer, found guilty, and ordered 25 lashes. Wm. H. Murphy was examined on the charge of feloniously conspiring with Peter Cullen to defraud Ezekiel White out of $1,200, by representing to White that he was Capt. Morris, of the Confederate States army, and had full authority to receive said Cullen as a substitute in lien of Jno. W. White. It appeared that Murphy under the name of Morris, got White's money, mustered Cullen into an imaginary company, gave a discharge to John W. White, and then, with his "pal" Callen, proceeded to divide the money obtained by the transaction — He was committed for final trial before Judge Lyons, and refused bail. Were all the cases of the above nature reported the people would be astonished at the amount of rascality practised by the so-called substitute
