Neal, John -1876
Born in Portland, Me., Aug 25, 1793; admitted to the bar of Maryland in 1819; went to England in 1823, where he was practically the first American author who attracted attention in English literature; returned to the United States in 1827, when he resumed the practice of law. He was the author of many novels which appeared at intervals from 1817 to 1870.
He died in Portland, Me., June 21, 1876
