Yankee religion. At the session of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church, North, which took place at Philadelphia in May, Rev. Samuel Miller offered a resolution proposing a day of fasting and prayer for the country; but, we are told by a Philadelphia paper, it was opposed by Drs. J. C. Backus, Nevin and others, because "it would have a discouraging effect, and might indicate a want of confidence in their ultimate success." So the matter was compromised by appointing a day of prayer only during the session. The Yankee nation then, so far as the Presbyterian Church thereof may be supposed to exercise any influence over it, has by a solemn act withdrawn its cause and itself from the keeping of the Almighty. They no longer pretend even to trust in his name or to yield themselves up to his guidance. They now avowedly put their trust in nothing but the world, the flesh and the devil. There is honesty, at least, in this proceeding, and there is boldness also. Honest
