nd he was made its first commander, serving as such until 1897, when county organizations were formed into regiments and he was elected colonel of the Florence regiment, which position he still holds. He was born June 26, 1830, in Charleston, educated there, and was in business there when the war began. He has been twice married, first in 1851, to Miss R. A. Webb, of Charleston. This lady died in 1884, leaving no children, two having died previously.. He was again married in 1886 to Mrs. M. E. Oliver, of Charleston, a sister of his first wife. George F. Long George F. Long was born in Newberry county, S. C., March 15, 1835, his parents being Jacob S. and Magdalen (Schumpert) Long. He was reared in Newberry county and received his education there. In April, 1861, upon the outbreak of the war between the States, he became a member of Company C, Third South Carolina regiment, with which he served, in Kershaw's brigade, McLaws' division, Longstreet's corps, as a non-commissione
