He was seventh in the male line, from Richard Dana, the colonial settler, through Jacob, Jacob second, Anderson first, Daniel, and Anderson second. In the female line, he was descended from Ann Bullard, Patience---, Abigail Adams, Susanna Huntington, Dolly Kibbe, and Ann Denison, whose mother, it should be noted, was Anne Paine, a daughter of one of the best-known and most widely disseminated families of New England. It will be observed that although the surname of one of these maternal ancestors is unknown, there is every reason to believe that, like the rest, her family were colonists of straight English blood. The same statement is doubtless true in reference to all the collateral connections, hence it may be confidently asserted that, with the exception of the attenuated stream from the Italian forebears of
