crowning difficulty was the weakness in cavalry for offensive operations. The opposition which he encountered and the wants and difficulties which beset him are painfully manifest. The agony which wrung his noble being is truly pathetic. His patience, his ardent patriotism were sublime. Few men have been so tried in the crucible of agonized spirit. Organization of the 1st Regiment. --The first Regiment of Virginia Volunteers, now at Camp Pickens (Department of Alexandria) is organized as follows: Colonel, P. T. Moore; Major, Wm. Munford; Adjutant, S. P, Mitchell; Surgeon, J. S. D. Cullen; Assistant Surgeon, Thomas E. Manry; Acting Quartermaster. Lieut. Wm. H. Palmer. John Dooley, Captain 1st Co., James K. Lee, Captain 2d Co., Wm. O. Taylor, Captain 3d Co.; J. G. Gris wold, Captain 1th Co.; F. J. Boggs. Captain 5th Co.; Wm. H. Gordon, Captain 6th Co., F. Miller, Captain 7th Co. Capt. Mitchell, in addition to his Regimental Adjutancy, has been appointed by General Bonham Adjutant of the entire camp, or post. Since its arrival in camp, the Regiment has acquired a considerable (but not undeserved) reputation, and much praise for soldierly acquirements and efficiency. Election of officers. --In pursuance of that clause of the Conscription Bill requiring the reorganization of companies and battalions, the following officers have been elected for the war in the First Virginia Regiment: Colonel, Wyart M. nd were destroyed in a skirt of wood, opposite our position from which they were driven, subjected to a disastrous fire from the right, left, and front. The prisoners taken were yesterday on their way to this city, and were expected to reach here last night. They were but a few miles from the city late in the afternoon. They were marched by land under guard. Among those killed or wounded, we have a names of the following officers; Killed--Col. Ward of the 4th Florida regiment; Major Wm. H. Palmer, of the 1st Virginia regiment, And son of Mr. Wm. Palmer, of this city,) and Capt. Jack Humphreys, of the 17th Virginia regiment. Wounded--Col. Corse, of the 17th Virginia regiment; Col. Kemper, of the 7th Virginia regiment; and Colonel Garland, of Lynchburg severely.
