1873, and has held that office continually since. In 1877 he was appointed auditor of Horry county and filled that office until 1889; also served as chairman of the Democratic county committee of Horry county for several years. In 1886 Dr. Norton assisted in founding and became editor of the Horry Herald, a newspaper published in Conway, and continued as its editor until 1894, when he disposed of his interest. He was born in Marion county, S. C., in 1841, and was married in 1869 to Miss Ellen Powell, of Fair Bluff, N. C. They have five children: Julian Ovando, private secretary to his uncle, Hon. James Norton, member of Congress from the sixth South Carolina district; Ella Wood, now Mrs. B. W. Crouch, of Saluda, S. C.; James Arthur, at present (1898) attending Wofford college; John Clarence, and Mabel P. He is a member of the Confederate Veterans' association of Horry county; also a member of the Knights of Honor and Chosen Friends fraternities. Clarence Crosby Olney Clarenc
