It was assigned to Peabody's (1st) Brigade, Prentiss's (6th) Division, Army of the Tennessee, and was engaged soon after its arrival in the great battle of Shiloh. On the morning of that battle, April 6th, the pic Ga.; Savannah, Ga.; Lynch Creek, S. C.; Bentonville, N. C. notes.--Leaving Iowa August 6, 1861, it proceeded to Cape Girardeau, Mo., where it was assigned to Prentiss's Division. It was engaged on active duty in Missouri for several months, during which it fought at Belmont, sustaining the heaviest loss of any regiment in thaarmed and equipped, and on the morning of April 6th arrived at Pittsburg Landing just as the battle of Shiloh was commencing. It had been previously assigned to Prentiss's Division, but being unable to find that command, Colonel Reid ordered the regiment into line, and it fought in McClernand's Division.
