The advocacy of an extensive specie currency, and the proposition for a sub-treasury, in 1837, alienated many of the Democratic party, and they formed a powerful faction known as Conservatives.
They finally joined the Whigs, and, in 1840, assisted them materially in electing General Harrison President.
